2017-2018 PGY1 Residency Preceptors

Primary Personnel Providing Residency Training

The Residency Program Director (RPD) and primary preceptors who will be assuming responsibility for the resident’s training and professional development are experienced practitioners and preceptors with an interest in community based practice, pharmacy care across the healthcare continuum, and pharmacy education. The primary personnel are all residency trained or have equivalent years of experience.

 

Residency Program Director (RPD):

                     Sarah graduated with her PharmD from Oregon State University. She then completed her PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency with Legacy Health System in Portland, OR. Sarah established clinical pharmacy services at Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center in 2009 as well as the PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency program in 2013. Sarah is now the Director of Quality for Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center.

 

  • 2018-2019: Katie Steele, PharmD, BCACP  

                     Katie grew up in Bozeman, Montana and moved to Texas for undergrad and pharmacy school with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. She completed a PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency with H-E-B Pharmacy and the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy in Austin, TX. Katie then moved north to the great state of Oregon to complete the PGY-2 Ambulatory Care and Academia Pharmacy Residency with Pacific University and Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center. Katie is currently a clinical pharmacist for Virginia Garcia primary care clinic in Newberg, OR as well as the PGY-1 Residency Coordinator for the 2017-2018 residency year.

 

Primary Preceptors:

 

 John Begert, PharmD graduated with his PharmD from Oregon State University. He completed a Ambulatory Care and Academia fellowship with Pacific University and went on to complete a PGY-2 Ambulatory Care and Academia Residency with Pacific University and Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center. John is now an Assistant Professor with Pacific University and a clinical pharmacist with Virginia Garcia Cornelius primary care clinic and a research project preceptor for the PGY-1 residents.

 

 Bridget Bradley, PharmD, BCPP graduated from Oregon State University/Oregon Health Sciences University with her PharmD. She then completed a PGY-1 residency at the Roseburg, Oregon VA and then a PGY-2 in Psychiatry at Avera Behavioral Health Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Bridget precepts residents for a mental health elective and also has served as a project preceptor. 

 

  Samantha Flores, PharmD, BCACP grew up in Pico Rivera California and obtained her Bachelor of  Science from the University of California Riverside. She completed her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Pacific University Oregon School of Pharmacy in May 2013. She then graduated her PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residency at Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center and PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency at Kaiser Permanente Colorado. Samantha is currently working as a Clinical Pharmacist at Virginia Garcia Hillsboro and is one of the primary preceptors for the PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residents on their ambulatory care rotation. 

 

 Melanie Foeppel, PharmD, BCACP graduated from the University of Washington School of Pharmacy. Upon graduation, Mel completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver, WA and a PGY-2 Ambulatory Care and Pharmacy Education Residency at the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA. Mel is currently an Associate Professor at Pacific University School of Pharmacy, Residency Pharmacy Director for the PGY-2 Ambulatory Care and Academia Residency program at Pacific University and a transitions of care preceptor for the PGY-1 residents.

 

   Christine Hicks, RPh is the Pharmacy Director for Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center. Christine established pharmacy services for the entire Virginia Garcia organization, and oversees community and clinical pharmacy. Christine serves as the preceptor for the Administration elective for the PGY-1 residents.

 

 Shannon Kelly, PharmD completed her Bachelor of Science and PharmD at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska in May 2015.  She then moved to the Pacific Northwest to complete her PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency at Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center and PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Residency at Providence St. Peter Family Medicine in Olympia, Washington.  Shannon is currently working as a clinical pharmacist at Virginia Garcia in Hillsboro and is one of the primary preceptors for the residents on their ambulatory care rotation.

 

  • Gabe Lopez, PharmD 

 

  Jennifer McElravey, PharmD, BCACP, AE-C obtained her BS Pharmacy degree from Purdue University in 1997 and her PharmD from Idaho State University in 2016.  She became a board certified ambulatory care pharmacist in 2016. She is currently working as a clinical pharmacist at the Virginia Garcia Beaverton clinic and is chair of the pharmacy and therapeutics committee. Jennifer precepts PGY-2 residents for a pulmonary elective at her site.  

 

 Brandon Nuziale, PharmD, BCACP grew up in Queens, New York and completed his PharmD and Notre Dame of Maryland University located in Baltimore, Maryland. He then went on to complete a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice residency with an emphasis in primary care at St. Louis College of Pharmacy and Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He moved further west to complete a PGY-2 Ambulatory Care/Academia and Pacific University Oregon School of Pharmacy and Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor with Pacific University School of Pharmacy and is a teaching preceptor for the PGY-1. He also serves as a mentor for various residency projects/assignments. Brandon also serves as the residency coordinator and clinic preceptor for the PGY-2 program. 

 

  Elise Phelps, PharmD, BCACP grew up in beautiful Boise, ID and moved to Missoula, MT for undergrad and pharmacy school. She graduated from the University of Montana with in PharmD in 2013 and initially took a job with Walgreens. After realizing she desired a more clinically focused career, Elise went on to complete a PGY-1 Community Residency with Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center and a PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Residency with Kaiser Permanente Colorado. Elise is currently Virginia Garcia's clinical pharmacy manager and works as a clinical pharmacist at Virginia Garcia's primary care clinic in McMinnville, OR. She serves as a residency preceptor for standards of care and topic discussions.

 

 Alison Reta, PharmD, CDE, is originally from Sacramento, CA. She earned her PharmD at the University of California, San Francisco and completed an Ambulatory Care-focused PGY1 residency as well as a Ambulatory Care/Academia fellowship at the University of Southern California. She spent nearly nine years working in community health centers in the Los Angeles area before moving to Portland in 2015 to join the Virginia Garcia team, where she currently serves as a coordinator for the clinic’s Diabetes Education services.
