Description of Practice Site:
The School of Pharmacy at Pacific University offers a three-year, year round modified block curriculum leading to the PharmD degree. The School is housed in the state-of-the-art Health Professions Campus along with seven other health professional programs. The competency-based curriculum delivers courses within a modified block design that encourages teamwork. The School has a drug outlet license but does not operate a dispensing pharmacy. Pharmacy consultation services are provided through an interdisciplinary diabetes clinic, pharmacotherapy clinic, and a Drug Information Service. Faculty practice at VGMHC, Tuality, and other off-site inpatient and community pharmacies through collaborative agreements.
Resident's Activities at this Site:
The Oregon Pharmacy Teaching Certificate (OPTC) Program is jointly offered by the two schools of pharmacy in the state and is offered to all residents in the area. This is required for VGMHC PGY1 residency completion. Precepting skills are a focus of the teaching certificate program as well as didactic coursework to assist residents in providing formative and summative feedback. The resident will also be invited to faculty workshops that are provided throughout the year to gain further knowledge surrounding the three facets of academia--teaching, scholarship and service.
Residents participate in teaching through facilitation of pharmacy practice days occurring every other Tuesday in the fall. In addition, the resident will attend and help direct learners at the weekly APPE learning hub for students in the Hillsboro, Oregon area. They will be trained to provide feedback and guidance to pharmacy students prior to these experiences. The resident will also be involved with IPPE and APPE students from both Pacific University School of Pharmacy and Oregon State University College of Pharmacy initially as a co-preceptor and then as a primary preceptor if they meet the state legal requirements to precept. They will gain precepting experience as a supervising pharmacist of any learners rotating through their work sites.
